‘Perfectionist on the piano wins the Lang Lang master class with strength’

| Kevin won Lang Lang"s master class with highest score in his age group

Kevin Zhou, at 12 years old, has won more than 60 awards in various international and domestic competitions, due to his extreme love of and excellence in piano performance.

In this piano performance competition, the musician who wins the grand prize can get the guidance of world reknowned pianist Lang Lang. Kevin Zhou once admitted that his favorite performer is Lang Lang, and he lived up to his expectations and got this opportunity with the highest score in the group. He still remembers that Lang Lang instructed him to play "Romanian Folk Dance". The strong and cheerful dance style and the large span between the keys caused him to always miss a very light bass. Lang Lang said to him:

「"You need to keep practicing this sound until you don’t need to look at it. Otherwise, even if you are very proficient, you will still have a 1% chance of making the mistake on stage.”」

This was a great shock to Kevin, who had not yet clearly defined his music dream at the time.

Since then, in order to avoid this 1% mistake, Kevin Zhou will find a quiet time to watch the replay of his playing repeatedly after stepping off the stage every time, and find out the mistakes and keep practicing.

“If I don"t correct these mistakes in time, I will have more risks on the stage in the future, and it will also make me more nervous, because the nervousness comes from lack of self-confidence." Kevin said firmly.

Kevin Zhou"s two music teachers, Ms. Chen and Mr. Deng, commented on him like this:

Kevin is an excellent pianist. He has an extraordinary understanding of music and has a deep thinking about his playing. This is a talent, not only in his fingers, but also in his body and in his brain. People like to talk about the importance of talent, but often ignore his hard training. His playing level has far surpassed his peers, but he will face more intense competition within the world. What we can do at Harrow is to try our best to support him on music expertise and lead him enjoy music.

Kevin once performed at a concert with an audience of two thousand people. The sensational and enthusiastic scene is still unforgettable to him. He dreams of giving a concert at the Sydney Opera House one day. There, there is a stage big enough to communicate with world-renowned musicians, and there are more shining honors and applause. He also knows that all of this requires him to become a more professional performer and also requires unswerving courage.

Becoming a professional performer, takes courage to move forward

In a traditional school, he was a student who attended classes in the morning and practice piano in the afternoon. He tried hard to achieve a work balance, he spent less time on his studies and less time with his classmates. P.E classes are often taken up by other key subjects, and a mountain of questions in a test paper makes him very tired every day and cannot get the physical exercise he deserves.

It seemed that his desire to be a professional musician would mean giving up more of his academic studies. Traditional education made him exhausted, so he and his parents decisively chose international education with more diverse evaluation dimensions.

There is no perfect education, only the right pathway.“Facts have proved that the choice of holistic education is suitable for him.” Kevin’s father said:

"Since we joined Harrow Haikou, there has been always a lot of activities and E.A. classes for Kevin, such as swimming, football, basketball, and table tennis. I cherish every school day afternoon, seeing Kevin getting off school bus with a big smile in the sunlight, indicating this young man has spent another happy day in school. That moment is exactly what happiness means to me and Kevin’s mom. That never happened before.”

Another big achievement is that his English has improved in leaps and bounds! Through the school"s extracurricular activities, including the chamber orchestra, he has met more students who love music, they practice together quite a lot, and he held a personal concert with his friends at the school. "

When it comes to the question Why Harrow?

Dad shows lots of feeling. "Traditional education require children to be good at every aspect in one standard, we tried and found out it is not suitable for us. Some children are only good at one aspect, if he continues to follow this path, he may face the result of being eliminated by traditional education. Therefore, we started to do subtraction, respecting Kevin’s aspiration to focus on music, this is why we came to Harrow without doubts. The school fully supports the child"s expertise and evaluates him from more dimensions than scores on test papers.

Scholarships is an honour, also means responsibility

Bing Xin Scholarship has brought a strong sense of honour to Kevin. More importantly, he understands that being a scholar means he has more responsibility, the responsibility to bring his music passion to the community. "Only by improving my playing skills , I can help support my classmates to make a music band, and perform together". He hopes to influence more students, learn music together, and share the joy of music.

Facts have proved that he has done it. Since the establishment of the scholarship in Harrow Haikou, Kevin has won the Bing Xin Scholarship for two consecutive years. He held a grand solo recital with his friends at school, played with his classmates in the Chamber Ensemble, and showed confidence at the Shakespeare Oral English Festival.

His talent, hard work and persistence have been recognised and witnessed by the public. I think this is the meaning of holistic education --- support your inner desire, gain friendship and teamwork, and lead you to a higher level and further world
