Twenty-five years ago, environmental advocates from the public, the outdoor industry and the land management community responded to the call to protect our natural lands and LNT (Leave No Trace) was born, an outdoor movement that reminds people to be aware of and take action to protect and preserve their local ecology when moving in nature.

MIS will introduce LNT in Term 3 with the aim of preparing students to use the outdoor skills they have learnt when moving in nature to minimise their impact on the land, water, plants and animals in the natural environment and to protect and preserve the local ecology.
Be an LNT practitioner
"The LNT programme” has seven principles
each covering a specific topic.
P 1
Plan Ahead & Prepare
Adequate travel planning and preparation helps to ensure the safety of travelers, while helping to reduce damage to the land.
P 2
Travel & Camp
on Durable Surfaces
The goal of outdoor travel is to traverse natural areas while avoiding damage to land or waterways. The outdoorsman needs to allow enough time and effort to choose a suitable camping site.
P 3
Dispose of waste properly
Avoid generating large amounts of rubbish and dispose of it properly.
P 4
Leave what you find
When you leave your area, you need to restore the environment to its original appearance by not digging ditches or building ramps, tables, chairs or other improvements.
P 5
Minimize Campfire impacts
Camping stoves have become essential equipment for camping. The cookers can be operated in almost any weather conditions and leave no trace.
P 6
Respect wildlife
Don"t disturb wildlife or plants. Observe wildlife from a distance so that they are not frightened or forced to flee.
P 7
Be considerate of others
Be aware of the impact your personal actions have on others. Excessive noise, uncontrolled pets and vandalised environments can all reduce the attractiveness of the outdoors to nature.
The seven principles are well established, but they are not set in stone and the LNT organisation is constantly examining, evaluating and re-crafting new principles to provide more comprehensive information to minimise impact on the natural environment.
How is the content of the LNT programme introduced at MIS set up?
"The LNT curriculum is based on two key concepts: respect for the environment and minimal impact. Based on the seven principles and core concepts, the curriculum is developed from three aspects: nature education theory, nature education examples and nature education practice, to promote the development of nature education at MIS.
